The talks of forming new tax authority are resurfacing. The idea is in deliberation phase. The options are either to form a new tax authority or to have an independent wing within the FBR to grow organically. The aim is to bring sectors and areas which are not paying their due share of taxes into the tax ambit, and to have an integrated system of GST on goods and services at front end to facilitate the taxpayer as currently multiple filing has increased the cost of compliance for businesses, especially SMEs.

Whatever form the entity may appear, it will have digitally driven focus to capture all the transactions. The process to integrate with or replace FBR will take 2-3 years. The human resource gathering and technology acquisition and implementation will take time. Slowly and gradually, the ambit of new authority will enhance with a clear objective to replace the physical interaction of FBR human resource by automation.

Will review interest rates after inflation rate plummets: Governor SBP, Reza Baqir
By Ali Ahmed on November 12, 2019

  • Pakistan economy undergoing slowdown, Governor SBP admits
  • Baqir informed that he has resigned from the International Monetary Fund's (IMF) administration
State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) Governor Reza Baqir admitted that Pakistan economy was going through a slowdown phase.

He said this during Reza Baqir's media talks in Karachi on Tuesday. As per reports, the SBP Governor said that the foreign reserves increase last week was not due to a single factor, but because of sentiment improvement and lowering forward book liabilities.

Talking about the high interest rate, Baqir said that higher interest rates were due to unabated inflation. “When inflation rate will plummet, we will review interest rates", he said. The governor admitted that there were some structural faults behind rising inflation, which are being addressed.

Talking about Saudi oil facility, the SBP chief said that the Saudi oil facility is transparent i.e. Total imports are shown in current account, and facility is shown in financial account.
